President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity, fairness and sportsmanship as the All Progressives Congress (APC) commences its nationwide primary elections.
In a statement marking the start of the exercise, Tinubu described the primaries as a critical test of the party’s cohesion and strength ahead of the next general elections.
The President said the primaries, beginning with House of Representatives contests and culminating in the presidential primary on May 25, are more than candidate selection processes, but a referendum on the party’s unity and democratic values.

He encouraged party leaders and stakeholders to embrace consensus arrangements where possible, noting that such efforts would help minimise internal conflicts and strengthen party cohesion.
Where consensus fails, Tinubu urged aspirants and delegates to conduct themselves peacefully and uphold democratic principles, stressing that both winners and losers have responsibilities to preserve party unity.
“In every contest, there will be winners and losers. Winners must be magnanimous, while those who lose should remain committed to the party and prepare for future opportunities,” he said.
The President warned against divisive politics, urging party members to avoid actions that could weaken the APC, especially as opposition parties look to exploit internal disagreements.
He also directed party leaders, including governors, to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants, emphasising that fairness and transparency are essential to credible primaries.
Tinubu further called for greater inclusion of women and youth in the electoral process, describing them as vital to the party’s future and national development.
On security, the President tasked the police and other agencies to remain professional and restrict their roles to maintaining peace during the primaries.
He expressed confidence in the party’s ability to conduct successful primaries and urged members to work together to secure victory in the general elections.
