The Sultanate Council has urged Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Safar on Tuesday, in line with established lunar observation practices.
In a statement issued by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the council called on religious leaders and faithful to report verified sightings of the moon to designated authorities. The announcement will determine the official commencement of the new month.
The Sultan emphasised the importance of adhering to traditional moon sighting methods, which remain central to the Islamic calendar. He noted that accurate observation ensures uniformity in religious activities across the country.
According to the statement, committees have been set up in various states to coordinate the sighting process and receive reports from observers. These committees will work closely with the national moon sighting committee to verify claims.

The Sultan urged Muslims to participate actively in the process, describing it as both a religious duty and a unifying exercise for the community. He also encouraged prayers for peace, stability and prosperity during the new month.
Safar, the second month in the Islamic calendar, holds significance for Muslims as a period for reflection and spiritual renewal. Religious scholars often use the time to emphasise moral teachings and community values.
The council advised that any credible sighting should be communicated promptly through official channels to avoid misinformation. It also cautioned against spreading unverified reports on social media.
If the crescent is sighted on Tuesday, Safar will begin the following day. Otherwise, the current month will complete 30 days before the new month is declared.
The Sultanate reaffirmed its commitment to guiding the Muslim community on religious matters and ensuring that practices are carried out in accordance with Islamic principles.
