Paris Saint-Germain and Portugal midfielder Vitinha remains among the leading names in the 2026 Ballon d’Or conversation after a season that saw him play a key role in PSG’s European success.
The Portuguese midfielder’s performances have earned him recognition among several power rankings and made him one of the players widely discussed ahead of the prestigious individual award.
Vitinha’s rise was particularly pronounced after PSG’s Champions League triumph, with some rankings placing him at the top of the Ballon d’Or race before the 2026 World Cup. One major ranking described his consistency and influence as central to his candidacy.
His case was strengthened by his importance to PSG’s midfield throughout the season. He was regularly deployed by manager Luis Enrique and became a key figure in the team’s possession-based approach.

Vitinha also played an important role for Portugal, adding international performances to an already strong club campaign.
However, the Ballon d’Or race remained highly competitive, with several players emerging as serious contenders.
Lamine Yamal and other leading European stars were among the names frequently mentioned in pre-award rankings, while Vitinha’s position changed as the season progressed and players’ performances at the World Cup altered the picture.
A final July power ranking placed Vitinha fifth, after he had previously occupied the top two positions in several editions. The ranking attributed his decline partly to Portugal’s World Cup performance, while still acknowledging the strength of his club campaign.
Other assessments have also highlighted his technical quality, press resistance, passing ability and influence in midfield. Sporting News, for instance, described him as one of the world’s outstanding midfielders and noted his contribution to PSG’s Champions League campaign.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or race has therefore developed into a contest involving players with different strengths, from individual statistics and goals to Champions League success and international achievements.
Vitinha’s candidacy is particularly notable because midfielders traditionally face a tougher challenge in an award often dominated by prolific forwards.
His performances for PSG have nevertheless strengthened the argument that a midfielder can win the award through influence, consistency and control of matches.
As the award approaches, attention will remain on how voters weigh club success against individual brilliance and international performance.
For Vitinha, his Champions League-winning season has already established him as one of the leading figures in the conversation, even if the final rankings have shifted since the beginning of the campaign.
