Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave following the approval of President Bola Tinubu, marking his first official break since assuming office on May 29, 2023.
The leave, which began on Thursday, August 6, 2026, will provide the Vice President an opportunity for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as he prepares for the next phase of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to a statement from the Presidency, Shettima will use the period to review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and strengthen his capacity for continued public service.
The Presidency said the leave is intended to enable the Vice President to return to office with renewed focus as the administration intensifies implementation of key economic and governance reforms.
Since taking office alongside President Tinubu, Shettima has played a central role in coordinating several strategic government initiatives spanning economic development, food security, humanitarian response, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.

He has also presided over meetings of the National Economic Council (NEC), the constitutional body comprising the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other senior government officials responsible for deliberating on national economic policies and development priorities.
The Vice President has equally represented President Tinubu at numerous regional and international engagements, where he has advanced Nigeria’s positions on economic integration, investment promotion, peace and security, climate action and sustainable development.
The Presidency noted that throughout his time in office, Shettima has remained committed to supporting the President’s reform agenda and strengthening collaboration across all levels of government to deliver improved economic opportunities and better living standards for Nigerians.
It added that the Vice President’s commitment to loyalty, duty and public service has continued to define his role within the administration as it pursues reforms aimed at building a more secure, productive and prosperous nation.
Officials said the temporary leave would not affect the functioning of government, noting that established administrative structures remain in place to ensure continuity of governance during the period.
Shettima is expected to resume his official duties at the expiration of the two-week leave, returning with what the Presidency described as renewed energy and greater preparedness to support the implementation of the administration’s priorities.
