President Bola Tinubu has commissioned a 198-kilometre water pipeline project in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, marking a major step in efforts to improve access to potable water for residents of Abuja’s rapidly expanding satellite communities.

At the inauguration ceremony, Tinubu described the project as a critical intervention designed to address long-standing water shortages affecting households, institutions, and businesses in Bwari and surrounding districts. He said the new pipeline would significantly boost water distribution capacity, reduce reliance on unsafe sources, and improve public health outcomes.

According to officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the pipeline is expected to connect underserved communities to existing water treatment plants while also supporting future urban expansion. The project spans multiple districts and is designed to serve thousands of residents who have struggled with irregular water supply for years.

Tinubu noted that access to clean water remains a fundamental component of his administration’s infrastructure agenda, stressing that investments in basic services are essential for sustainable development. He added that the government would continue to prioritise projects that directly impact the quality of life of Nigerians.

FCT authorities also highlighted the economic benefits of the project, including job creation during construction and improved conditions for small businesses that depend on water supply. They said the pipeline would help reduce the cost burden on residents who currently rely on water vendors.

Community leaders in Bwari welcomed the development, describing it as long overdue. Many residents expressed optimism that the project would bring relief to households that have endured years of water scarcity.

The commissioning forms part of a broader plan by the federal government to upgrade infrastructure across the FCT, with similar projects expected to be rolled out in other area councils. Officials say continued investment in water systems will be key to meeting the needs of Abuja’s growing population.
