Controversy is stirring following comments made by Phyna, the winner of the popular reality TV show “Big Brother Naija” (BBNaija).

The star revealed that, despite a personal belief in her fertility, she has no intention of ever having human children, preferring instead to find companionship with pets and officially adopt the role of a cat and dog mom.

Phyna, whose full name is Otabor Ijeoma Josephina, made the declarations during a recent livestream, where she opened up about her views on relationships, family, and personal contentment.

Her remarks have since ignited a significant online conversation, touching on societal expectations of women, motherhood, and emotional well-being.

“Even though I’m very fertile, I don’t want to have a child,” Phyna stated during the broadcast, according to a transcript of her comments circulating online. She was emphatic, repeating, “I just want to be a mom, cat and dog mom.”

She later re-emphasized her position, insisting that her physical ability to bear children does not alter her life choices.

“I’m very fertile. I’m very fertile… but I just don’t even want to have a child, you understand?” she told viewers.

The comments were a marked pivot from traditional societal views in Nigeria and many parts of the world, where bearing children is often seen as a primary purpose and a source of social status for women. Phyna’s rejection of this expectation, coupled with her preference for “pet parenthood,” has divided public opinion.

During the livestream, Phyna provided a candid, almost sociological breakdown of why she believes women’s priorities shift toward pets as they age. She suggested that emotional exhaustion from past relationships plays a key factor.

She argued that women are more prone to developing strong emotional bonds with pets as they enter their late 20s and 30s, particularly if they are not partnered or are not seeing themselves settling down. Phyna speculated that this shift often follows a period of romantic disillusionment.

“Maybe you’ve been through too many broken relationships,” she suggested, speaking generally before applying the observation to her own life. “So women tend to start developing likeness for pets like that and I think I’m in that stage right now.”

The former BBNaija winner added that she feels she is currently in a phase of life where the companionship and simple affection offered by animals is far more appealing to her than the complex and lifelong responsibilities of raising children.

Phyna’s statements have resonated with some fans, who praised her courage in speaking honestly about her desire for a child-free life. They argued that her transparency helps to normalize different life paths for women.

“It’s refreshing to see someone break the mold,” wrote one supporter. “Not every woman’s purpose is motherhood, and that’s okay.”

However, others have criticized her comments as dismissing the importance of human family and potentially discouraging the formation of relationships.

“Pets are great, but they are not a replacement for people,” read one critical comment. “This feels like someone who has been hurt and is trying to avoid being hurt again.”
