Pi-CNG

The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles Pi-CNG has directed transport operators participating in its scheme to comply with agreed reduced fare structures as part of efforts to make transportation more affordable for Nigerians.

The directive was issued by the Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG, Ismaeel Ahmed, following reports of fare increases by some operators despite benefiting from cheaper operating costs under the CNG programme. The complaints were particularly reported in Abuja and other urban centres.

According to the initiative, all participating operators signed agreements to ensure that savings from compressed natural gas usage are passed on to commuters through lower transport fares. However, some operators have been accused of charging fares similar to conventional petrol-powered transport services.

The Pi-CNG programme was introduced by the Federal Government after the removal of petrol subsidies in 2023 to reduce transport costs and encourage the use of cleaner energy alternatives such as compressed natural gas.

Officials stated that monitoring teams have been deployed to improve compliance, while passengers have been encouraged to report operators who violate approved fare structures. Despite these efforts, enforcement challenges persist due to limited manpower and inconsistent monitoring across transport routes.

The initiative noted that expanding the use of CNG-powered vehicles is expected to reduce operational costs for transport operators, ease pressure on commuters, and support Nigeria’s broader energy transition agenda.

Authorities also emphasized that stronger oversight, improved infrastructure, and increased public participation will be necessary to ensure that the programme delivers its intended benefits across the transport sector.
