The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced the election of Bala Yunusa Mohammed as the party’s new National Chairman, following internal leadership changes and the resignation of the former chairman.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP confirmed that Mohammed, who previously served as National Organizing Secretary, was chosen to lead the party into a new phase of political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party described Mohammed as an experienced administrator with “tactical brilliance” and a strong commitment to grassroots political ideology, saying his emergence reflects a strategic effort to strengthen internal cohesion and electoral readiness.

The leadership change follows the resignation of Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, the former National Chairman, who has since joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The NNPP expressed appreciation for his contributions during his tenure, acknowledging his role in party development.

“On behalf of our national leadership, the National Executive Committee, and our teeming members across the 36 states and the FCT, we thank Dr. Ajuji Ahmed for his dedicated service,” the statement read.

It added: “We recognize the contributions he made during his tenure and sincerely wish him the very best in his future political endeavors.”

The party said the leadership transition comes at a critical moment for Nigeria, citing economic hardship, rising inflation, and insecurity as major challenges confronting citizens.

According to the NNPP, the country is also witnessing what it described as “coordinated assaults” on democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 elections, including internal party crises and increased legal disputes targeting opposition parties.

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, it has become evident that the opposition space is being targeted by sponsored internal crises and calculated attempts to destabilize parties from within,” the statement said.

It further alleged that “judicial warfare” is being used to weaken credible political alternatives, warning that such developments threaten democratic stability.

With Mohammed now at the helm, the NNPP said it is positioning itself as a “sanctuary for the hopes of the common man” and a viable alternative to the current political structure.

“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains committed to salvaging the nation,” the party started.

The NNPP called on members and supporters nationwide to unite behind the new leadership, describing the road to 2027 as a political marathon in which the party is now “better positioned than ever” to compete effectively.
