Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised Nigeria’s traditional rulers for their enduring role in preserving peace, promoting unity, and supporting governance, declaring that the institution remains one of the strongest pillars holding the country together.

Speaking during an engagement with royal fathers, Shettima said traditional rulers continue to serve as vital bridges between government and local communities, especially in addressing security concerns and fostering social cohesion.

The Vice President noted that despite constitutional limitations on their formal powers, traditional institutions retain enormous influence and credibility among the people. According to him, their ability to mediate disputes, mobilise communities, and promote cultural values remains indispensable to national stability.

Shettima emphasised that the Federal Government recognises the contributions of monarchs in tackling insecurity, resolving communal conflicts, and supporting development initiatives. He urged continued collaboration between traditional institutions and government agencies to strengthen grassroots governance.

He observed that many communities still look to their traditional rulers for guidance and leadership, making them critical partners in implementing public policies and maintaining order.

Several royal fathers at the event reiterated their commitment to supporting government efforts, particularly in areas of peacebuilding, youth engagement, and community development. They also called for greater inclusion of traditional institutions in policy formulation and conflict-resolution mechanisms.

Security experts have frequently highlighted the strategic importance of traditional rulers, noting that their local knowledge and community networks can provide valuable intelligence in addressing crime and insurgency.

The Vice President further stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a strength rather than a source of division. He commended traditional leaders for preserving cultural heritage while promoting national unity across ethnic and religious lines.

Observers say the remarks reflect increasing recognition of the role traditional institutions play in governance, particularly in rural communities where government presence may be limited.

As Nigeria continues to confront security and developmental challenges, Shettima expressed confidence that stronger partnerships between elected leaders and traditional rulers would contribute significantly to peace, stability, and national progress.
