The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, has commended the collaboration between the Federal Government and the Kaduna State Government in tackling insecurity, describing the state’s implementation of the Armed Forest Guard initiative as the best in the country.

Ribadu made the remarks on Saturday at the graduation ceremony of the pioneer batch of Armed Forest Guards in Kaduna State, where he praised the quality of training received by the recruits and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening community-based security across the country.

Represented by the Director of Internal Security at the Office of the National Security Adviser, Malam Sani Sani, the NSA said an assessment conducted nationwide showed that Kaduna recorded the highest standard in the implementation of the programme.

“From the evaluation that we carried out across the country, the training in Kaduna State has been recorded as the best at the moment,” Ribadu said.

He added that the Office of the National Security Adviser would readily consider any future request by the Kaduna State Government to train additional forest guards, given the success of the programme.

According to the NSA, more than 1,000 forest guards underwent intensive training in weapons handling, physical fitness, combat readiness, civil-military relations, engagement with host communities, inter-agency cooperation and adherence to the rule of law.

He explained that the newly trained personnel would serve as first responders within their communities, helping to resist attacks by criminal elements before conventional security agencies arrive.

“The beneficiaries of this training are expected to return to their respective communities and establish a first line of community resilience against every invading enemy of the state,” he said.

Ribadu recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu launched the Armed Forest Guard initiative on May 24, 2025, to secure Nigeria’s vast forest belts, protect biodiversity and deny terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups safe havens in ungoverned areas.

He noted that the President assigned the Office of the National Security Adviser the responsibility of providing strategic leadership and coordinating training for the initiative nationwide.

In his remarks, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani expressed appreciation to the NSA for supporting the programme and formally requested approval for the recruitment and training of an additional 1,000 forest guards.

The governor said security remained a top priority of his administration, adding that significant improvements had been recorded since he assumed office in 2023.

He noted that communities in previously troubled local government areas such as Birnin Gwari, Giwa and Kachia have become more accessible following sustained security operations carried out in collaboration with the Federal Government.

According to Sani, residents can now travel to several areas that were once considered unsafe without requiring police escorts, describing the development as evidence of progress in the fight against insecurity.

He expressed confidence that with continued support from the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders, Kaduna State would continue to strengthen its security architecture and promote lasting peace and development.
