The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a significant reduction in road traffic crashes during the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, recording a 27 per cent drop compared to the same period in 2025.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, the number of road traffic crashes fell from 191 cases in 2025 to 142 in 2026.

The report also revealed a 22 per cent decline in the number of crash victims, with those involved in accidents dropping from 1,364 persons in 2025 to 1,064 in 2026.

Similarly, the number of injured persons decreased by 25.4 per cent, from 576 to 430 during the period under review.

Ohaeri described the achievement as one of the most remarkable operational successes recorded by the corps in recent years, attributing the improvement to proactive traffic management strategies, intensified public enlightenment campaigns, effective enforcement activities, and enhanced emergency response systems.

He explained that the corps strategically deployed personnel and operational assets to critical highways and transport corridors across the country. These efforts included round-the-clock patrols, intelligence-led surveillance, motorised chain patrols, prompt rescue operations, traffic control measures, stakeholder collaboration, and sustained public awareness campaigns.

According to him, the initiatives contributed significantly to safer travel conditions for millions of Nigerians who journeyed before, during, and after the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended the dedication and professionalism of FRSC personnel, special marshals, and partner agencies involved in the special patrol operations.

He noted that the results demonstrated the impact of strategic planning, sustained enforcement, and collective commitment to road safety in reducing crashes and their consequences on Nigerian roads.

The Corps Marshal urged Nigerians to maintain safe road-use practices beyond festive periods, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility requiring the cooperation of all citizens.
