Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has explained why he selected former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, saying the former governor shares his commitment to tackling poverty through education and human capital development.

Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Obi said Kwankwaso’s philosophy of lifting people out of poverty aligns with his own vision for rebuilding Nigeria’s economy and improving citizens’ living standards.

According to the former Anambra State governor, education would be a central pillar of an NDC administration because it remains the most effective tool for transforming society and driving sustainable development.

“Kwankwaso has the philosophy of pulling people out of poverty,” Obi said, adding that both leaders believe investment in education is essential to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential.

“You cannot change society without education. If you look at my X, formerly Twitter, I made it clear that I will emphasise education. Education is going to change society,” he said.

Obi stressed that Nigeria must prioritise the development of its human capital, arguing that equipping citizens with quality education and skills is critical to national growth and competitiveness.

He said the shared commitment to education and economic transformation formed the basis of his partnership with Kwankwaso.

“Kwankwaso believes in this. I do. We have synergy,” Obi added.

The NDC presidential candidate also dismissed speculation of a rift between him and his running mate, insisting that both men remain united and are working together to strengthen the party’s campaign ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.

His comments come amid growing political activity as parties intensify preparations for the polls, with candidates outlining their policy priorities and seeking to build public support.

Meanwhile, Esther Umoh, a former campaign photographer for Obi during the 2023 presidential election, shared photographs on Saturday showing the NDC presidential candidate shopping at a supermarket.

The images, which circulated on social media, attracted reactions from supporters and political observers, although Obi did not comment on the photographs.
