The police have arrested a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Adoga, from Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State, over allegations of rape, assault and the forceful seizure of a woman’s mobile phone.

Adoga was arrested on October 12, 2026, three days after the alleged incident, following a petition submitted to the police by the survivor’s father.

According to the police, the incident occurred on October 9, with the suspect allegedly demanding N15,000 from the woman in connection with the sexual assault.

The petition accused Adoga of raping and further assaulting the victim before forcefully taking her Infinix Smart 7 mobile phone.

The police said the phone had been recovered, while officers visited the scene of the alleged crime and obtained photographic and electronic evidence.

However, the authorities did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged demand for N15,000 or whether the suspect had responded to the accusations.

Rape and sexual assault are serious criminal offences under Nigerian law. The alleged forceful seizure of the victim’s mobile phone could also attract separate charges if established.

The case highlights the importance of reporting sexual violence promptly and ensuring survivors receive appropriate support during police inquiries and any subsequent court proceedings.

The petition submitted by the survivor’s father reportedly prompted police action, leading to the suspect’s arrest within three days of the alleged incident.

The allegations against Adoga remain subject to investigation and judicial determination. His arrest does not amount to a conviction, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

Further details concerning possible charges and the suspect’s arraignment were not immediately available.
