Fifteen kidnapped worshippers were among 22 victims rescued during a coordinated security operation along the Kwara-Kogi border, following sustained operations against criminal hideouts in the forest.

The victims reportedly regained their freedom after security forces intensified pressure on kidnappers operating in the area, with the operation involving military personnel, police officers, local hunters and vigilante groups.

The rescue operation, conducted in early July, targeted criminal camps located in forests around the Kwara-Kogi axis, where several victims had reportedly been held for weeks.

Among those rescued were 15 worshippers abducted from Ikerin Church in Eda Oniyo, Ekiti State, during a night vigil on April 28. The worshippers had reportedly spent more than two months in captivity before their release.

Four residents of Idofin-Igbana, who were abducted in early April, were also rescued, while three of eight worshippers abducted from ECWA Church, Omugo, were among the other victims freed during the operation.

The operation underscores the growing reliance on joint security operations in areas where kidnappers exploit difficult forest terrain to conceal victims and evade security personnel.

The involvement of local hunters and vigilante groups was particularly significant because of their familiarity with the terrain and knowledge of local communities.

Security operations along the Kwara-Kogi border have intensified amid concerns over the activities of kidnapping gangs operating across state boundaries.

The latest rescue also comes against the backdrop of several other successful operations in Kogi. In May, the state government confirmed the rescue of victims abducted from the Daarul-Kitab Islamic Orphanage in Lokoja.

Gunmen had attacked the orphanage on April 26 and abducted 23 pupils and the proprietor’s wife. Fifteen victims were rescued initially, while the remaining nine were later freed in a separate operation.

The Kogi State Government and security agencies have continued to emphasise the importance of intelligence gathering, community cooperation and sustained operations against criminal groups.

The rescue of the latest batch of victims is expected to provide relief to their families while reinforcing calls for stronger security presence in communities and forests around the Kwara-Kogi corridor.

Security agencies are expected to continue operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps and preventing further abductions in the affected areas.
