Governor Monday Okpebholo

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said residents who previously expressed displeasure with him by throwing sachet water now welcome him with affectionate names, describing the change as evidence of growing public acceptance of his administration.

The governor made the claim during a live broadcast on Saturday, shared by ITV and Radio, where he spoke about his relationship with residents and public reactions to his leadership.

According to Okpebholo, residents along Sapele Road in Benin City have changed the nickname they use for him from “Akpako Rescue” to “Okphe’s baby”.

He said the change reflected a shift in how some residents received him during public outings, contrasting their current reactions with earlier incidents in which he was allegedly pelted with sachet water.

The governor did not provide specific details about when the alleged incidents occurred or the circumstances surrounding the change in public reception.

Okpebholo’s comments come amid political debate over his administration’s performance and public perception in Edo State.

He also expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, insisting that the Federal Government’s economic reforms were beginning to produce positive results.

The governor pointed to what he described as lower commodity prices and a stronger naira as indications that the policies introduced by the President were yielding benefits.

He maintained that the economic direction of the Tinubu administration was encouraging, suggesting that Nigerians would increasingly feel the impact of the reforms.

The Federal Government has defended its economic policies, including the removal of petrol subsidy and foreign exchange reforms, as necessary measures to address structural weaknesses and improve the economy.

However, the reforms have also attracted criticism over their impact on the cost of living, household purchasing power and business operating expenses.

Okpebholo’s remarks on the economy reflect the support of some state government officials for the President’s policies as political discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor’s account of changing public reactions also places renewed attention on the relationship between elected leaders and residents, particularly as Nigerians assess the performance of their political office holders.

Neither the governor’s comments nor the broadcast details provided an independent assessment of the extent of the alleged change in public reception or the claimed improvement in commodity prices and the naira.
