President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, following his election as Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee, one of the organisation’s most influential bodies responsible for budgetary and administrative matters.

In a statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu described Ibrahim’s emergence as a significant achievement for Nigeria and a reflection of the confidence the international community has in the country’s diplomatic capacity.

The President noted that the appointment demonstrates Nigeria’s growing relevance within the global system and highlights the quality of its representatives at multilateral institutions. He expressed optimism that Ibrahim would bring his wealth of experience in governance, business and diplomacy to bear in the discharge of his new responsibilities.

The Fifth Committee plays a crucial role within the United Nations framework, overseeing the organisation’s finances, administrative reforms and budget implementation. Decisions taken by the committee directly affect the operations of various UN agencies and programmes worldwide.

Tinubu said Ibrahim’s election to the strategic position underscores the respect Nigeria commands among member states and reflects the country’s commitment to constructive engagement on global issues. He urged the ambassador to continue promoting transparency, accountability and efficiency in the committee’s activities.

Political analysts have described the appointment as a diplomatic victory for Nigeria, noting that leadership roles within key UN committees are highly competitive and often require broad support from member countries.

Ibrahim, a former senator and businessman, was appointed Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in 2025. Since assuming office, he has participated in several high-level discussions involving sustainable development, global security and international cooperation.

The Presidency further stated that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening multilateral institutions and advancing solutions to global challenges through active participation in international organisations.

Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s support for Nigerian diplomats serving across the world, emphasizing the importance of projecting the nation’s interests and enhancing its image abroad.

Observers believe Ibrahim’s new role could provide Nigeria with greater visibility in global decision-making processes while creating opportunities for stronger engagement with other member states on issues of mutual interest.
