The First Lady urges APC senatorial candidates to ensure transparent distribution, insisting that beneficiaries must be selected across political and religious lines.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has unveiled a ₦110 million empowerment package for elderly citizens and persons with disabilities in each participating senatorial district under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), urging political leaders to ensure that the intervention reaches deserving Nigerians irrespective of party affiliation.

The programme comprises two schemes, each receiving ₦55 million to support 250 beneficiaries per senatorial district. Under the arrangement, 250 persons with disabilities will receive ₦200,000 each, while another 250 elderly citizens will receive the same amount under the RHI Elderly Support Scheme.

Oluremi Tinubu announced the initiative at a stakeholders’ meeting attended by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; APC senators, members of the RHI Governing Board and the party’s senatorial candidates.

She urged the candidates to work with the initiative to identify vulnerable residents and facilitate the distribution of the funds, explaining that the senatorial district model was adopted following consultations with political leaders on the most effective way to implement the programme.

The First Lady, however, warned against restricting the benefits to APC members, stressing that the intervention was designed to support vulnerable Nigerians across political and religious divides.

“We don’t say give it only to party members, but give it to your voters,” she told the candidates, urging them to prioritise deserving beneficiaries in their constituencies.

She said the initiative reflected her longstanding commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens, drawing on her 12 years of experience in the Senate and previous empowerment programmes.

“The vulnerable in society are the people we are supposed to care for,” she said.

According to her, the Renewed Hope Initiative had previously supported persons with disabilities and was expanding its interventions to provide further economic assistance. She added that the elderly support programme had entered its fourth edition.

Oluremi Tinubu explained that she had considered different implementation models, including working through state coordinators and traditional rulers, before consultations resulted in the adoption of the senatorial district approach.

She said the arrangement would improve coordination, increase public awareness of the initiative’s programmes and help reach vulnerable communities more effectively.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the First Lady for bringing serving and incoming senators together to coordinate the intervention.

Akpabio said President Bola Tinubu had approved the arrangement, adding that the programme was intended to extend assistance beyond party boundaries.

He urged the senatorial candidates to regard the responsibility as a public trust and ensure that the financial support reached elderly citizens and persons with disabilities in their constituencies.

The initiative forms part of the First Lady’s broader social intervention efforts targeting vulnerable households, women, children and displaced communities across Nigeria.
