Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to working with traditional rulers to promote national unity, strengthen security and accelerate economic development across Nigeria.
Shettima stated this on Thursday when he received the 17th Emir of Gumel, Dr. Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani, during a courtesy visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Vice President described traditional rulers as indispensable partners in nation-building, noting that their influence at the grassroots makes them important to sustaining peace, preserving cultural values and strengthening relationships between communities and government.
He said the Tinubu administration held traditional institutions in high esteem, recognising royal fathers as custodians of Nigeria’s heritage and important contributors to national stability.
According to Shettima, traditional rulers serve as parents and mirrors of society, safeguarding the country’s traditions while promoting peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.
He commended the new Emir for his commitment to unity and development, describing him as a combination of traditional leadership and modern technological expertise.

Shettima expressed confidence that the Emir’s background in technology and public administration would help advance development in Gumel Emirate and beyond.
The Vice President also assured the emirate of his continued personal support, particularly in healthcare, education and other areas considered essential to improving the wellbeing of residents.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration between government and traditional institutions in addressing community needs and promoting inclusive development.
In his remarks, the Emir of Gumel expressed appreciation to the Tinubu administration for its support to the emirate, particularly during the period surrounding the death of his predecessor, the late Emir Ahmad Muhammad Sani II.
He said the Gumel Emirate Council would sustain its relationship with the Federal Government to advance the interests of the people across different sectors.
The traditional ruler also prayed for the re-election of Tinubu and Shettima in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, while calling for peace and unity across the country during the electioneering period.
The meeting was attended by members of the Gumel Emirate Council and other prominent indigenes of the area.
The engagement underscores the administration’s emphasis on collaboration with traditional institutions as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots participation in governance, promote peaceful coexistence and support development initiatives across the country.
Traditional rulers continue to play significant roles in community mobilisation, conflict resolution and the preservation of cultural heritage, making their cooperation important to government efforts to address local challenges and sustain national cohesion.
