The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 70-year-old man, identified as Usman Abubakar, over the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in Tsakanin Bayara area of Bauchi metropolis.

The suspect was arrested following a complaint filed by the victim’s 48-year-old father at the ‘E’ Division, Yelwa, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the arrest in a statement, saying the incident was reported after the alleged abuse occurred two days earlier.

According to the police, the girl’s father reported that Abubakar allegedly lured his daughter to an uncompleted building in the area at about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 24.

The suspect allegedly sexually abused the child at the location before leaving the scene.

Following the complaint, police operatives commenced investigations and arrested Abubakar in connection with the allegation.

The command said the suspect would remain in custody while investigators work to establish the facts surrounding the incident and gather evidence relevant to the case.

The arrest adds to a series of child sexual abuse cases recently reported by the Bauchi State Police Command.

Barely days before Abubakar’s arrest, the command announced the apprehension of another suspect, Balarabe Adamu, over the alleged defilement of his eight-month-old stepdaughter in Lame community, Toro Local Government Area of the state.

The proximity of the two cases has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of children to sexual abuse and the need for stronger protective measures within homes and communities.

Child protection advocates have consistently stressed the importance of early reporting, community vigilance and effective prosecution in tackling sexual violence against minors.

The police have urged parents, guardians and community members to promptly report suspected cases of abuse rather than allowing them to go unreported.

The command also reaffirmed its commitment to investigating allegations of sexual offences and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought before the appropriate court.

While the arrest marks an important step in the investigation, the police have not disclosed whether the suspect has been formally charged.

Investigations into the allegation are ongoing, with authorities expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate legal action.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
