A governorship aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from the race following allegations of involvement in a N3 billion rice contract fraud, raising fresh concerns about integrity and accountability ahead of the elections.

Party stakeholders, civil society groups, and political observers have called for a thorough investigation into the claims, warning that the controversy could damage the ADC’s credibility if not addressed promptly. The allegations, which surfaced earlier this week, accuse the aspirant of mismanaging funds tied to a government-backed rice supply contract, though no formal charges have yet been filed.

Sources within the party disclosed that internal discussions are ongoing, with some members urging the aspirant to step aside to allow for an independent probe. According to insiders, the pressure intensified after documents purportedly linking the candidate to irregularities in the contract began circulating on social media.

The ADC leadership has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but a senior party official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the party is committed to upholding transparency and due process. “We cannot afford to ignore allegations of this magnitude. The party will take appropriate steps once all facts are established,” the official said.

Civil society organisations have also weighed in, calling for anti-corruption agencies to intervene. They stressed the importance of accountability, particularly for individuals seeking public office. “Anyone aspiring to lead must be above reproach. These allegations must be investigated thoroughly to maintain public trust,” a spokesperson for one of the groups said.

Efforts to reach the aspirant for comment were unsuccessful as of press time. However, aides close to the campaign have reportedly dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, claiming they are part of a smear campaign orchestrated by rivals to derail the candidate’s ambition.

Political analysts warn that the controversy could have broader implications for the ADC’s electoral prospects, especially if the party fails to respond decisively. They note that voter confidence is often influenced by perceptions of integrity and transparency among candidates.

As the situation unfolds, attention is expected to shift to relevant authorities to determine whether the allegations hold merit. For now, the aspirant remains in the race, but growing calls for withdrawal continue to test both the candidate’s resolve and the party’s commitment to ethical standards.
