The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a possible nationwide industrial action over delays in implementing agreements reached with the Federal Government for 2026.
Union leaders expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s failure to honour key aspects of previous agreements, including funding for universities, staff welfare and revitalisation projects. The warning was issued after an emergency National Executive Council meeting.
ASUU said the continued delay could disrupt academic activities across public universities if urgent steps are not taken. “We cannot continue to operate under broken promises,” a senior union official stated, adding that members are growing increasingly impatient.
The dispute centres on unresolved issues such as earned academic allowances, improved salary structures and funding for infrastructure development. The union also raised concerns about the slow pace of implementing policies aimed at improving tertiary education.

Students and parents have expressed concern over the potential impact of another strike, given the history of prolonged disruptions in Nigeria’s university system. Previous industrial actions have led to extended academic calendars and delayed graduations.
The Federal Government has yet to respond officially to the latest warning, though officials have previously cited revenue constraints as a challenge in meeting all demands.
Education stakeholders are calling for dialogue to avert another shutdown, stressing the need for sustainable solutions to recurring disputes between ASUU and the government.
