Governor Hyacinth Alia

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has expressed optimism over improving security conditions in the state, revealing that displaced residents are gradually returning to their communities as peace efforts begin to yield results.

The governor made this known while updating President Bola Tinubu on developments in the state, long affected by violent conflicts and mass displacement.

According to Alia, the security situation has significantly stabilised in several previously troubled areas, allowing internally displaced persons (IDPs) to leave camps and rebuild their lives. He noted that the return of residents is a strong indicator that confidence is being restored among local populations.

The governor highlighted that farmers, who form the backbone of Benue’s economy, are resuming agricultural activities after months of disruption. He described the development as critical to ensuring food security not only for the state but for the country at large, given Benue’s reputation as Nigeria’s “food basket.”

Alia credited the progress to sustained collaboration between state authorities, federal security agencies and local stakeholders. He emphasised that continued support from the federal government would be essential in consolidating the gains and preventing a relapse into violence.

Efforts are also underway to rehabilitate affected communities, with plans to provide basic infrastructure, security presence and social services to returning residents. The government is working to ensure that those leaving IDP camps have access to shelter, healthcare and education as they reintegrate into society.

However, the governor acknowledged that challenges persist, including rebuilding trust among communities and addressing the root causes of conflict. He called for long-term solutions that go beyond immediate security interventions, including economic empowerment and conflict resolution mechanisms.

President Tinubu has reportedly reassured the state of continued federal backing, particularly in strengthening security operations and supporting recovery initiatives. Observers say the renewed focus on stabilisation could mark a turning point for Benue if sustained.

For many residents, the gradual return home signals hope after years of uncertainty. As farming activities resume and communities begin to rebuild, stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic that lasting peace can be achieved.
