South Africa’s national team captain, Ronwen Williams, has openly expressed his disappointment regarding the lack of support from fellow African nations following Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Thursday night setback leaves South Africa facing an uphill battle in Group A as they pursue a place in the knockout rounds of the global tournament.

Speaking in the aftermath of the match, Williams admitted he was deeply surprised and hurt by the sheer volume of African football fans who actively backed Mexico rather than throwing their weight behind an African representative on the world stage.

The goalkeeper issued a passionate plea for greater continental unity during major sporting events, highlighting a historical precedent of African nations rallying together that seemed notably absent during their fixture.

“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup tournament, but I can’t figure out why our own case is different.

“Many Africans supported Mexico, not us, the South Africans. We almost shed tears, but it’s truly sad. As Africans, let’s stand for each other, let’s stand together,” Williams stated.

While some football enthusiasts sympathized with the captain’s sentiments and agreed that the continent should present a united front at international competitions, the plea was met with severe pushback from various quarters across the continent.

A significant number of social media users and football fans from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe offered a contrasting view to Williams’ call for unity.

Many argued that recurring reports of xenophobic attacks targeted at African migrants living in South Africa have severely fractured the sense of continental solidarity.

Several fans referenced past incidents of violence involving foreign nationals in South Africa as the primary factor shaping how the rest of the continent currently views the nation. Consequently, many of these supporters openly admitted to backing Mexico during the match, citing the underlying sociopolitical tensions as the driving force behind their decision to withhold support for Bafana Bafana
