United Nigeria Airlines

United Nigeria Airlines has unveiled an ambitious expansion strategy that will see it strengthen its footprint across West Africa before launching long-haul international services to Europe, North America, the Middle East and other key destinations, a move expected to boost regional connectivity and support Nigeria’s growing aviation sector.

The airline said its immediate priority is to deepen operations within West Africa by introducing scheduled services to Monrovia in Liberia, Banjul in The Gambia, Dakar in Senegal, Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire and Conakry in Guinea, expanding its regional network beyond its existing international service to Accra, Ghana.

The planned expansion is aimed at improving direct air links between Nigeria and major commercial, tourism and government centres across the sub-region, while offering passengers more convenient travel options and reducing dependence on connecting flights.

United Nigeria Airlines currently operates flights to 15 domestic destinations across Nigeria and maintains an expanding network of 26 routes, positioning itself as one of the country’s fast-growing indigenous carriers.

The airline said the expansion reflects its commitment to supporting increasing demand for intra-African travel and aligning with continental efforts to improve air transport connectivity and economic integration.

Beyond West Africa, the carrier is preparing for a new phase of international operations with plans to commence flights to the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Türkiye, Dubai and Saudi Arabia within the next six to 24 months, subject to regulatory approvals, aircraft acquisition and operational readiness.

The proposed long-haul routes are expected to provide Nigerian travellers with more direct access to major global destinations while enhancing the country’s connectivity with key business and tourism markets.

Despite rising operating costs, particularly the sustained increase in aviation fuel prices, the airline said it remains committed to executing its growth plans and expanding opportunities for passengers across its network.

Industry observers say stronger regional air connectivity could significantly benefit tourism, trade and investment by making travel across West Africa faster and more efficient.

Improved direct flights between cities such as Lagos, Accra, Dakar, Abidjan and Banjul are expected to encourage multi-destination tourism, facilitate business travel and strengthen cultural exchanges within the region.

The airline’s proposed international expansion could also improve Nigeria’s position as a regional aviation hub by offering more seamless connections between Africa and major global destinations.

As African airlines continue to explore new growth opportunities under the continent’s aviation integration agenda, United Nigeria Airlines’ expansion plans represent another step toward strengthening regional mobility while creating wider travel options for passengers.

If successfully implemented, the expanded network is expected to enhance the airline’s competitiveness, support economic development and contribute to the continued growth of Africa’s aviation and tourism industries.
