Nyesom Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed speculations of a possible alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting the PDP will contest independently.

Speaking during a media interaction in Abuja, Wike said there were no ongoing talks or arrangements linking the PDP with the APM or any other political platform, stressing that such claims were unfounded and misleading.

He maintained that the PDP remains strong enough to reposition itself and compete effectively without entering into what he described as “unnecessary political coalitions.” According to him, alliances driven by desperation rather than ideology would not serve the long-term interests of the party or Nigerians.

Wike noted that while political collaborations are not entirely out of place in a democracy, they must be rooted in shared values and clear objectives. He argued that the PDP must first resolve its internal issues, rebuild trust among members, and strengthen its grassroots structures before considering any form of partnership.

The former Rivers State governor also used the opportunity to call for unity within the PDP, urging party leaders and stakeholders to focus on reconciliation and discipline. He warned that internal divisions posed a greater threat to the party’s chances in 2027 than any external opposition.

Wike reiterated his commitment to the growth of the PDP, saying efforts were underway by concerned members to reposition the party as a credible alternative in the next election cycle. He added that the focus should be on policy direction, governance track record, and reconnecting with the electorate.

On the broader political landscape, Wike said Nigerians were increasingly interested in performance-driven leadership, noting that political parties must respond to citizens’ expectations with concrete plans rather than electoral gimmicks.

He further cautioned against the spread of misinformation, particularly on social media, where unverified claims about political alliances can create confusion among supporters and the public.

As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 polls, Wike’s position is expected to shape ongoing conversations within the opposition space, especially as parties weigh strategies to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His remarks signal a preference for internal consolidation over coalition politics, at least for now, as the PDP navigates its path toward the next general election.
