Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled an attack by suspected terrorists in Sokoto State, preventing further casualties and restoring calm to the affected community after a gun battle.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 17, 2026, in Garin Hillo Village, located within Sabon Birni Local Government Area.
According to security sources, troops attached to the 8 Division and stationed at a Forward Operating Base in Gatawa swiftly responded to intelligence reports indicating the movement of armed assailants in the area.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on X, noting that the soldiers mobilised immediately upon receiving the alert. On arrival, they engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, forcing them to retreat under sustained military pressure.

In the aftermath of the attack, troops have maintained a reinforced presence in the area, conducting patrols and surveillance operations aimed at deterring further incursions. Residents have also been reassured of their safety, as security forces continue to monitor the situation closely.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges faced by communities in parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to launch sporadic attacks on rural settlements. It also highlights the importance of intelligence gathering and rapid military deployment in countering such threats.
Security observers have noted that the ability of troops to respond swiftly to credible information significantly enhances the effectiveness of operations against insurgent and terrorist elements. In this case, timely intervention not only repelled the attackers but also prevented a potentially higher casualty toll.
Authorities have not yet released official details regarding the identity or affiliation of the attackers. However, efforts are believed to be ongoing to track the fleeing suspects and prevent regrouping in nearby areas.
The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, particularly in vulnerable communities. It also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies to support ongoing operations.
As normalcy gradually returns to Garin Hillo Village, the sustained military presence is expected to reinforce public confidence and deter further attacks, while broader efforts to address insecurity in the region continue.
