Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said none of the politicians challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including his former running mate, Peter Obi, has what it takes to transform Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed made the assertion during an interview on the MIC ON Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, where he questioned the capacity of opposition figures seeking to unseat the president in the 2027 election.
The former lawmaker said he would rather advise Tinubu to prepare to leave office than hand power to any of the politicians currently positioning themselves as alternatives to the president.
“I will simply advise uncle (Tinubu) to please prepare to hand over and move away, but not to the people contesting against him,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He argued that the politicians challenging Tinubu had, at different times, been part of the same political establishment they now criticise.
“Because none of them will improve Nigeria. All those people contesting against him too were all in bed together at some point or another, including Peter Obi. At some point, he was in PDP,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed and Obi jointly contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, finishing third behind Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The 2023 election marked a major political moment for the Labour Party, with the Obi-Baba-Ahmed ticket attracting significant support, particularly among young Nigerians and voters seeking an alternative to the two dominant political parties.
However, Baba-Ahmed has now expressed reservations about the ability of opposition politicians to deliver the kind of transformation Nigerians desire.
He also disclosed that he had advised Obi against joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying he had concerns about the former Anambra State governor’s decision to move away from his previous political arrangement.
According to him, he warned Obi that the ADC was not the appropriate platform for his political ambitions.
Obi has emerged as one of the prominent opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general election, while several politicians and political groups continue to explore alliances aimed at challenging the ruling APC.
Baba-Ahmed’s comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the next presidential election, with opposition parties and politicians considering possible coalitions to defeat Tinubu.
The former Labour Party candidate, however, maintained that changing political leadership alone would not necessarily translate into meaningful improvement for Nigeria if those taking over lacked the capacity and vision to transform the country.
