Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has congratulated the government and people of Abia State on the 35th anniversary of the state, commending successive administrations for sustaining peace and promoting development.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, also praised the administration of Governor Alex Otti for its emphasis on security and good governance, describing these as critical to attracting investment and improving the welfare of residents.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker said Abia, created on August 27, 1991, from the former Imo State by the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, had remained largely peaceful and secure.

He attributed the state’s progress over the past 35 years to the collective contributions of past and present leaders, noting that successive military and civilian administrations had played various roles in advancing the state’s development.

Kalu specifically commended Otti’s administration for prioritising security, highlighting the establishment of an Air Force Office in Umuahia, the state capital, as part of efforts to strengthen the security architecture.

He also applauded the state government’s willingness to promote bipartisan cooperation with the Federal Government, particularly through the approval of Certificates of Occupancy for federal projects and initiatives in the state.

According to him, projects including the Industrial Court, Renewed Hope Housing Projects and newly approved federal educational institutions would contribute to Abia’s economic growth.

Kalu said the projects, alongside other developments expected in the state, would attract investments, create employment opportunities and expand infrastructure, stressing that continued cooperation between the federal and state governments would be beneficial to residents.

The Deputy Speaker also commended ongoing efforts toward the payment of pensions and gratuities to retired workers in the state.

He described the payment of retirement benefits as an obligation that governments must continue to fulfil in recognition of the contributions of workers who served the state.

“Abia at 35 is a story of resilience and progress. I commend the governments, present and previous administrations, for their efforts aimed at developing our dear state and I urge us to sustain the momentum of peace, unity and service delivery,” Kalu said.

He expressed optimism that stronger collaboration among political leaders and greater focus on security, infrastructure and economic development would further consolidate Abia’s progress as the state enters another phase of its history.
