Manchester City’s highly anticipated Women’s Super League title celebrations have been put on hold after a stunning 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie put on a defensive masterclass to help orchestrate the massive upset and deny the league leaders.

City came into the weekend fixture knowing that a victory, combined with a favorable result elsewhere, would secure their first WSL crown since 2016. The visitors appeared to be on track for the trophy when Kerolin capitalized on a defensive error just five minutes into the game, curling a beautiful shot past Nnadozie to open the scoring.

However, rather than folding under the pressure of the soon-to-be champions, Brighton dug deep. Nnadozie quickly shook off the early setback and anchored the defense, making four vital saves from inside the penalty area to keep her team in the fight.

Her resilience allowed Brighton to completely flip the script just before the halftime whistle, as Madison Haley finished off an assist from Fran Kirby to equalize in stoppage time.

Brighton carried that massive shift in momentum into the second half. Shortly after the restart, Kiko Seike surged down the right side of the pitch and blasted a shot into the roof of the net to give the hosts the lead. In the 65th minute, Haley struck again, reacting quickly to head in a rebound and make it 3-1.

While Manchester City applied heavy late pressure and managed to pull a goal back through Khadija Shaw in the 86th minute, Brighton’s defense held firm to secure the impressive victory.

Nnadozie’s individual brilliance was a major talking point following the match. Beyond her crucial saves, the Nigerian international recorded 15 recoveries, three clearances, and a vital last-man intervention. She was also highly active in Brighton’s buildup play, registering 58 touches and completing 26 passes.

Her performance reinforced her status as one of the elite goalkeepers in English football. She currently dominates the WSL goalkeeping statistics, leading the league in save percentage (75.0%), goals prevented (3.6), and saves from inside the penalty box (40).

The dramatic result leaves Manchester City at the top of the table with 49 points from 20 games, but it leaves the door wide open for title chasers Chelsea and Arsenal, who both have crucial games in hand.

Meanwhile, Nnadozie and her Brighton squad will look to carry their giant-killing form into next Saturday when they travel to face Manchester United.
