The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has called for stronger collaboration with the media to enhance accurate reporting on traffic management and road operations across Lagos.

The agency made this known following the conclusion of an investigative panel set up to examine allegations that some of its officials extorted ₦100,000 from commercial bus operators along the Coastal Road corridor.

Speaking on the findings, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, clarified that the affected vehicles were apprehended for traffic offences, particularly wilful obstruction, in line with existing road traffic regulations.

He explained that all fines imposed were legitimately paid into government-designated accounts, with evidence provided by the drivers involved.

Bakare-Oki said the outcome of the investigation effectively dispelled claims of extortion, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to transparency and lawful enforcement of traffic rules.

He stressed the critical role of the media in shaping public understanding of traffic policies, promoting road safety awareness, and encouraging compliance among motorists. According to him, responsible journalism is essential in supporting transport management efforts in a densely populated city like Lagos.

However, the LASTMA boss cautioned against the publication of unverified or sensational reports, noting that such actions could undermine public trust in traffic institutions and mislead road users.

While acknowledging the importance of constructive criticism, he urged media practitioners to prioritise fact-checking and due diligence when reporting on transport-related issues.

Reaffirming the agency’s openness, Bakare-Oki highlighted available communication channels, including a toll-free hotline and a Physical Complaints Unit, through which members of the public can report traffic incidents, verify information, and lodge complaints.

He added that sustained collaboration between traffic authorities and the media would contribute significantly to improving road discipline, reducing congestion, and strengthening transport governance in Lagos.
