Girls showcase tech skills as FG drives digital inclusion

The Federal Government has intensified its digital inclusion agenda with a nationwide programme that saw about 3,700 schoolgirls showcase innovative tech solutions aimed at addressing real-life community challenges.

The initiative, anchored on expanding access to digital skills among young females, brought together participants from secondary schools across the country, with projects ranging from mobile health applications and agricultural tools to AI-assisted learning platforms and community safety solutions.

Officials say the programme is designed to close the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, where girls remain underrepresented despite growing opportunities in the digital economy.

Speaking at the event, education and technology stakeholders highlighted the importance of early exposure to coding, robotics, and digital problem-solving skills. They noted that empowering girls with tech competencies is crucial for Nigeria’s long-term economic competitiveness.

Several of the showcased projects attracted attention from private-sector partners and innovation hubs, with discussions already underway for mentorship and incubation support for standout participants.

Government representatives also reaffirmed commitments to expanding digital learning infrastructure in public schools, including improved internet access, teacher training, and provision of devices in underserved areas.

Analysts say the initiative reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s education strategy, moving from traditional learning models to innovation-driven curricula that prepare students for global digital opportunities.

Organisers described the programme as a “pipeline for future tech leaders,” adding that sustained investment will be key to scaling the impact nationwide.
