President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as a towering symbol of justice, integrity, and national unity as he marked his 100th birthday.
Speaking at the centenary celebration in Akure, Ondo State, Tinubu said Fasoranti’s life embodies the ideals of fairness, courage, and service that Nigeria urgently needs.
The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, noted that the nonagenarian has remained a moral compass in Nigeria’s political evolution.
Tinubu praised Fasoranti’s decades-long advocacy for democracy, good governance, and education, describing his contributions as foundational to Nigeria’s democratic journey. He said the elder statesman’s leadership within the Afenifere socio-political group has strengthened national cohesion and promoted equity.
“As a teacher, administrator, and political leader, Pa Fasoranti has consistently stood for justice and the dignity of every Nigerian,” Tinubu said, adding that his legacy would continue to inspire generations.
The President also highlighted Fasoranti’s role in shaping progressive politics in the South-West and his influence in mentoring leaders across the country.
In recognition of his impact, Tinubu announced that a major infrastructure project—a newly constructed flyover—would be named after Fasoranti in Ondo State.
Dignitaries at the event included governors, ministers, traditional rulers, and political leaders who paid glowing tributes to the elder statesman.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State described Fasoranti as “a living legend whose life reflects selfless service and unwavering commitment to truth.”
Born in 1926, Fasoranti has served in various capacities, including as Commissioner for Finance in the old Western State. He later became a prominent voice in the pro-democracy movement during Nigeria’s military era.
Tinubu concluded that Fasoranti’s century-long life represents a rare blend of wisdom, patriotism, and resilience, urging Nigerians to emulate his values.
