The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a former managing director of the Port Harcourt Refinery over alleged ₦1.32 billion fraud, marking a significant development in ongoing efforts to tackle corruption in the oil sector.
The defendant was brought before a Federal High Court on multiple counts bordering on misappropriation of funds, abuse of office and diversion of public resources. Prosecutors alleged that the funds were siphoned through a network of contracts and shell companies during the official’s tenure.
According to the EFCC, investigations uncovered irregular financial transactions linked to refinery operations, raising questions about transparency and accountability in the management of public assets. The agency said it would present documentary evidence and witness testimonies to support its case.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the court to adjourn proceedings for trial. Legal representatives indicated readiness to contest the allegations, setting the stage for what could be a closely watched case.
Anti-corruption advocates have welcomed the prosecution, describing it as a test of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability in the oil industry. They stressed the importance of ensuring that cases involving public funds are pursued diligently and transparently.
The EFCC reiterated its resolve to recover stolen assets and prosecute offenders, as part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and restore public trust
