Urban renewal efforts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) received a major boost as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commissioned newly rehabilitated and expanded road networks in Karu, a rapidly growing satellite town on the outskirts of Abuja.
The commissioning, which took place just one week after the inauguration of a major water supply project in the same area, underscores the administration’s push to accelerate infrastructure development and decongest the city centre.
The Karu road project includes upgraded dual carriageways, improved drainage systems, and pedestrian-friendly features aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing mobility for residents and commuters. Officials say the development will significantly reduce travel time between Abuja city centre and surrounding communities.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu described the project as part of a broader strategy to improve living standards and stimulate economic activities in satellite towns. He noted that infrastructure expansion remains central to the administration’s urban development agenda.

FCT authorities highlighted that Karu has witnessed rapid population growth in recent years, placing increased pressure on existing infrastructure. The newly commissioned roads are expected to support housing expansion, commercial activities, and improved access to public services.
The Minister of the FCT stated that the project aligns with efforts to create a more inclusive and functional capital city, where development extends beyond the central districts to surrounding areas.
Residents and business owners in Karu have welcomed the development, expressing optimism that improved road networks will boost trade, reduce transportation costs, and enhance overall quality of life.
Urban planning experts say the focus on satellite towns is critical for sustainable city growth, particularly in addressing congestion and housing challenges in Abuja.
The Tinubu administration has indicated that more infrastructure projects are underway across the FCT, including road expansions, housing schemes, and public utilities upgrades.
With the pace of development accelerating, officials say the goal is to transform Abuja into a more efficient, accessible, and economically vibrant capital city.
