Presidency Fires Back at Obi Over Resignation Comment

The Presidency has dismissed comments by former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should consider resigning over Nigeria’s economic challenges, describing the remarks as politically motivated and detached from ongoing reforms.

Responding to Obi’s criticism, presidential aides argued that the administration inherited deep-rooted economic and structural problems and has remained focused on implementing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and attracting investment. The Presidency maintained that calls for resignation were unnecessary, insisting that the government remains committed to fulfilling its mandate.

The exchange follows Obi’s recent remarks questioning the pace of economic recovery and expressing concern over inflation, rising living costs, and the value of the naira. According to him, leadership must be accountable for the hardship experienced by citizens.

However, presidential spokespersons countered that difficult decisions such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms were necessary to prevent a more severe economic crisis. They argued that while the reforms initially created discomfort, early indicators suggest they are beginning to yield positive outcomes in government revenue generation and investor confidence.

The Presidency further accused opposition figures of attempting to score political points rather than supporting measures designed to strengthen the economy. Officials noted that previous administrations, including those supported by some current critics, failed to implement critical reforms due to political considerations.

Government representatives highlighted ongoing investments in infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, and social intervention programmes as evidence of the administration’s commitment to easing hardship and stimulating growth. They stressed that economic transformation requires patience and consistency.

Political analysts say the renewed war of words reflects the growing contest for public opinion ahead of the 2027 general elections. While opposition parties continue to scrutinise government policies, the ruling administration appears determined to defend its reform agenda.

Despite the criticism, the Presidency reiterated that President Tinubu remains focused on governance and will not be distracted by political attacks. Officials urged Nigerians to assess the administration based on long-term outcomes rather than short-term difficulties.

As debates over economic management intensify, many citizens continue to watch closely for tangible improvements in living conditions, employment opportunities, and overall economic stability.
