The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has commended the completion of a new world-class television studio at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) headquarters and the ongoing upgrade of the National Press Centre, describing both as milestones in modernising Nigeria’s public information system.

Speaking on Monday after inspecting the facilities in Abuja, the Minister said the projects reflect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening public broadcasting and enhancing the quality of information dissemination across the country.

Idris noted that the newly completed NTA studio ranks among the best broadcast facilities in Nigeria and across Africa, adding that it represents a major step in repositioning government-owned media organisations for effective service delivery.

“What we have seen today is the fulfilment of the President’s promise to modernise Nigeria’s public broadcasting infrastructure. This studio stands among the finest on the continent,” he said.

He explained that the development is part of a broader investment drive covering key government media institutions, including the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to the Minister, the ongoing reforms go beyond infrastructure to include improvements in content quality, professionalism, innovation, and capacity building for media personnel. He added that the procurement of modern broadcast equipment for NTA stations nationwide would further enhance public service broadcasting.

Idris also highlighted the relaunch of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme as a critical component of the transformation agenda, noting that it would significantly improve broadcasting standards and access to quality content.

“The Digital Switch Over, alongside these infrastructure upgrades, is opening a new chapter for Nigeria’s information sector. By the time the process is completed, Nigerians will experience a truly transformed public broadcasting system,” he stated.

The Minister further assured that the administration is equally focused on improving the welfare of workers in the information sector, stressing that sustainable reform requires investment in both infrastructure and human capital.

Following the inspection at the NTA headquarters, Idris visited the National Press Centre at Radio House, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of ongoing renovation works.

He said the upgraded Press Centre would serve as a modern media hub equipped with advanced facilities and high-speed internet connectivity to support journalists covering government activities and national events.

“The National Press Centre is being redesigned to provide a conducive environment for journalists to perform their duties efficiently. It must live up to its role as Nigeria’s foremost media hub,” he said.

The Minister urged contractors handling the project to ensure timely completion, adding that he would conduct a final inspection ahead of its commissioning.

He reiterated that the ongoing upgrades across government media institutions underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening public communication, promoting credible information dissemination, and aligning Nigeria’s information sector with global standards.
