President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday led principal officers of the National Assembly on a traditional Sallah homage to President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence, where he praised the administration’s economic reforms while calling for deeper action on security, infrastructure and national development.

Speaking after the visit, Akpabio said the delegation came to felicitate with the President on Eid al-Adha and to pray for continued wisdom, good health and peace for the country. He also noted that prayers were offered for the release of those in captivity and for national stability.

He commended Tinubu’s policy direction since assuming office in 2023, particularly reforms aimed at stabilising the economy. According to him, the administration had taken difficult but necessary steps that are already reshaping Nigeria’s economic structure.

Akpabio highlighted measures such as the removal of what he described as distortions in the foreign exchange system, the end of fuel subsidy-related inefficiencies, and efforts to unify tax structures. He added that long-standing issues, including multiple exchange rates and fiscal waste, had been addressed under the current administration.

He also pointed to improvements in fuel supply, noting the end of long queues at filling stations, and described ongoing tax harmonisation efforts as significant steps toward a more efficient revenue system.

While praising the reforms, the Senate President said more work remains to be done, stressing the need for collaboration between the executive and the legislature. He assured that the National Assembly would continue to support policies that promote national growth and development.

On security, Akpabio acknowledged progress in reducing large-scale coordinated attacks but said renewed attention was needed to address emerging threats in vulnerable communities. He cited continued incidents in some rural and border areas and called for stronger coordination across security agencies.

He also renewed calls for structured state policing, proposing a regulated framework and oversight mechanism to ensure efficiency, training and accountability. He said such reforms would help strengthen internal security in a country as large and diverse as Nigeria.

On the economy, Akpabio urged increased crude oil production and expanded investment in agriculture and infrastructure, noting that initiatives like the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto–Badagry corridor could drive long-term growth and food security.

He added that improved oil production, coupled with domestic refining capacity, would boost foreign exchange earnings and strengthen other sectors of the economy.

Akpabio concluded by expressing optimism that with sustained collaboration between the presidency, legislature and citizens, Nigeria would achieve greater stability, economic growth and security in the years ahead.
