Chelsea striker Liam Delap is set to leave the club for Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest after the two sides agreed a deal worth an initial £45 million.

The transfer is expected to become a club-record signing for Forest, with additional payments potentially taking the overall package to about £50 million.

Delap, 23, joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for around £30 million last year but struggled to establish himself during his first season at Stamford Bridge.

He scored only once in 28 Premier League appearances and was subsequently left out of Chelsea’s plans as the club reshaped its attacking options.

The move represents a significant turnaround for the striker, who had attracted attention during his time at Ipswich for his physical style, movement and goalscoring ability.

Nottingham Forest have agreed to make Delap their most expensive signing, surpassing the previous record fee paid for Omari Hutchinson.

The deal is understood to involve £45 million upfront, with further add-ons capable of increasing the total value to £50 million.

For Chelsea, the transfer could allow the club to recover its investment in Delap and potentially make a profit despite his limited impact during his first campaign.

The decision to sell also reflects the competition for places in Chelsea’s forward line as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.

Forest, meanwhile, are hoping Delap can rediscover the form that made him one of the most sought-after young English strikers.

The club is looking to strengthen its attacking options and believes the striker can provide greater physical presence and Premier League experience in the final third.

Delap’s move is also significant because it keeps him in the Premier League rather than sending him to another European competition.

Several clubs had reportedly shown interest in the forward, but Forest emerged as the destination as the transfer window approaches its deadline.

The transfer is expected to be completed subject to the final formalities and medical process.

For Delap, the move offers an opportunity to restart his Premier League career at a club prepared to make him a major part of its attacking plans.

For Forest, it represents a major financial commitment to a young striker whose best years may still be ahead of him.

The deal has therefore become one of the notable late moves of the summer transfer window, with both clubs expecting the transfer to serve their respective squad-building plans.
