The Nigerian Navy has arrested three suspected drug traffickers and intercepted illicit substances in a fresh operation aimed at disrupting criminal activities along Nigeria’s waterways.

The operation resulted in the apprehension of the suspects and the seizure of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, dealing another blow to criminal networks operating through the country’s maritime routes.

The Navy’s latest intervention highlights the increasing focus on Nigeria’s waterways as a major component of efforts to prevent the movement of narcotics and other prohibited items.

Security agencies have continued to strengthen surveillance around coastal areas, waterways and other routes believed to be used by criminal groups to transport illicit substances.

The three suspects were reportedly taken into custody following the operation, while the intercepted substances were secured for further investigation and possible transfer to the relevant law-enforcement authorities.

The Navy is expected to investigate the identities of the suspects, the origin of the seized substances and their intended destination as part of efforts to uncover the wider network allegedly behind the trafficking operation.

The development comes amid broader efforts by Nigerian security agencies to tackle drug trafficking, organised crime and other forms of maritime criminality.

Drug trafficking remains a major security and public-health concern, with criminal networks frequently adapting their routes and methods to evade law-enforcement agencies.

The Navy’s involvement in counter-narcotics operations has become increasingly important because waterways can provide traffickers with alternative routes for moving prohibited substances away from conventional checkpoints.

Authorities have repeatedly emphasised the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation in tackling organised criminal networks.

The latest arrests are therefore expected to contribute to ongoing investigations into maritime trafficking activities and could lead to further arrests if investigators establish links between the suspects and other members of the alleged network.

The Navy has also continued to call for greater vigilance and cooperation from communities located along Nigeria’s waterways.

Security officials maintain that timely information from residents, boat operators and other maritime stakeholders can assist authorities in identifying suspicious movements and preventing criminal activities.
