Oba of Benin

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has called for continuity in governance and backed President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The monarch spoke on Tuesday when the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, led members of the council to the Benin Palace to seek royal blessings and prayers for Tinubu’s re-election.

Oba Ewuare II said there was no need to seek a change in government merely for the sake of change, while stressing that his position should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any political party.

“The Benin throne is not partisan. There is no point for change for the sake of change,” the monarch said.

He urged political leaders to work together in the interest of the country, arguing that the existence of opposition parties should not prevent cooperation on issues affecting national development.

The Oba also appealed to opposition politicians to play their constitutional role without excessive criticism of the government, noting that no administration or individual could claim perfection.

The visit by the campaign council was specifically aimed at securing the monarch’s prayers and support for Tinubu’s second-term campaign.

Yari told the Oba that President Tinubu had constituted the campaign council as part of preparations for the 2027 election and that the delegation had come to seek royal blessings for the president.

The campaign council director-general also highlighted what he described as improvements under the Tinubu administration, including economic growth, inflation trends and developments in the foreign exchange market.

The Oba’s comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, with parties and political groups beginning to mobilise support across the country.

The monarch, however, maintained that the traditional institution remains non-partisan.

His position on continuity adds another prominent traditional voice to the growing political discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential contest, while leaving the electorate to determine its political choice through the electoral process.
