Shehu Sani

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has called for intensified military action against notorious bandit leaders Bello Turji and Ado Aleru, urging security forces to eliminate them just as they did Zamfara-based kingpin, Yellow Kachalla.

Sani made the call in a post shared on his X account, where he described the reported killing of Kachalla as a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against banditry and terrorism in the North-West.

According to him, the neutralisation of the notorious warlord signals progress in restoring peace to communities long terrorised by armed groups. He noted that similar decisive action against other high-profile bandit leaders would further weaken criminal networks operating across the region.

“The news of the extermination of the infamous and notorious Zamfara bandit leader ‘Yellow’ by Nigerian security forces is a major victory in the fight against terrorism in the North Western part of the country,” Sani wrote.

He stressed that individuals like Turji and Aleru remain key figures sustaining bandit operations, including mass kidnappings, cattle rustling and violent attacks on rural communities. Eliminating such figures, he argued, would disrupt command structures and reduce the frequency of attacks.

Security analysts have long identified Bello Turji as one of the most feared bandit commanders in the North-West, particularly in Zamfara, Sokoto and parts of Niger State. Ado Aleru has also been linked to several deadly raids and has at times been associated with controversial peace deals between authorities and armed groups.

Sani’s comments come amid renewed military offensives targeting bandit enclaves in forested areas across Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna states. In recent months, security forces have stepped up air and ground operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps and cutting off supply routes.

Residents in affected communities have continued to call for sustained action, expressing cautious optimism whenever high-profile bandit leaders are taken out. However, concerns remain about reprisals and the ability of remaining factions to regroup.

The Federal Government has repeatedly pledged to end banditry and restore stability in the region, though the challenge persists due to the complex and evolving nature of the threat.

Sani maintained that consistent and decisive military pressure remains critical, adding that victories such as the reported elimination of Yellow Kachalla should be built upon to achieve lasting peace.
