Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger protection, empowerment, and inclusion of widows, urging an end to harmful traditional practices and systemic discrimination across the country and Africa.
In a message marking International Widows’ Day 2026, observed on June 23, the First Lady stressed the need for urgent action to uphold the rights of widows and ensure they live with dignity, free from poverty, exclusion, and abuse.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Widows – The African Perspectives,” Tinubu said widows must be supported through laws, education, and economic opportunities that enable them rebuild their lives and provide for their families.
“Widows deserve to live free from discrimination, harmful practices, poverty, and exclusion,” she stated, adding that governments and societies must create systems that protect their rights and promote their well-being.
She emphasized that across Africa, certain cultural practices continue to dehumanise widows, calling for a collective effort to eliminate such traditions and replace them with values rooted in compassion and respect.
The First Lady noted that empowering widows economically remains key to achieving long-term stability for families and communities. According to her, access to education, financial support, and inclusive policies will help widows regain independence and hope.
Tinubu further urged stakeholders, including policymakers, community leaders, and civil society organisations, to prioritise programmes that support widows and integrate them into national development plans.
She highlighted the broader social impact of neglecting widows, warning that continued marginalisation could deepen poverty levels and weaken community structures.
The First Lady reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting inclusion and social protection, stressing that a society that uplifts its most vulnerable members is better positioned for growth and prosperity.
She also called on Nigerians to show empathy and solidarity with widows, encouraging communities to foster environments where they are treated with dignity and given equal opportunities.
Tinubu concluded her message by extending goodwill to widows across Nigeria and the world, expressing hope for a future where justice, equality, and economic empowerment are fully realised for all widows.
International Widows’ Day is observed globally to raise awareness about the challenges widows face and to advocate for policies that address their social and economic needs.
