Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged political leaders and citizens to approach the 2027 election cycle with maturity, tolerance, and a strong sense of national responsibility, warning that divisive rhetoric could threaten Nigeria’s peace and stability.
He also reassured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is actively working to reduce economic pressures through ongoing reforms and targeted interventions designed to improve livelihoods across the country.
Shettima made the remarks on Wednesday shortly after observing the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the Ramat Square Eid Ground in Maiduguri.
According to him, both federal and state governments are already implementing measures aimed at easing hardship, stabilising the economy, and expanding opportunities for citizens. He urged Nigerians to remain patient and continue supporting government efforts.
“As we enter the political phase, there is a need for maturity, forbearance and generosity of spirit in our political interactions. We must avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of overheating the polity because what binds us together as Nigerians supersedes whatever divides us,” he said.
The Vice President also called for continued prayers for peace and stability across the country, noting that unity is even more important at a time of global uncertainty and regional tensions.
He was joined at the Eid prayers by the Deputy Governor of Borno State Umar Usman Kadafur, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari, members of the National Assembly, and other senior government officials.
After the prayers, the Deputy Governor paid a Sallah homage to the Vice President at his residence in Maiduguri, commending his continued support for the state and reaffirming prayers for his health and continued service to the nation.
