The Nigerian Navy has dismissed a personnel who absented himself from duty for 1,346 days, reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline within the force.

Naval authorities disclosed that the dismissal followed due process after the individual failed to provide satisfactory explanations for his prolonged absence, which spanned nearly four years.

The offence, classified as desertion under military law, is considered one of the gravest breaches of service conduct.

According to officials, the personnel had been declared absent without leave shortly after failing to report back to his unit. Repeated efforts to trace his whereabouts reportedly yielded no results, prompting disciplinary proceedings in line with military regulations.

The Navy emphasized that discipline remains the backbone of operational effectiveness, especially at a time when maritime security challenges demand high levels of professionalism and commitment from personnel.

It noted that desertion not only undermines unit cohesion but also places additional strain on other service members who must compensate for the absence. Authorities added that such actions could jeopardize ongoing operations and national security objectives.

Military analysts say the dismissal sends a strong message within the armed forces, reinforcing accountability and adherence to established codes of conduct. They note that prolonged unauthorized absence is rare but treated with utmost seriousness when it occurs.

The Navy also reiterated its commitment to personnel welfare, stating that mechanisms exist for officers and ratings to seek leave, medical attention, or other forms of support when needed. It encouraged members facing challenges to utilize official channels rather than abandon their duties.

In recent years, Nigeria’s military has intensified internal reforms aimed at improving discipline, welfare, and operational efficiency across all branches. These efforts are seen as critical in addressing evolving security threats, including piracy, oil theft, and insurgency.

Observers believe maintaining strict discipline within the ranks is essential to sustaining public confidence in the armed forces and ensuring mission readiness.

The development underscores the military’s resolve to enforce standards while balancing accountability with institutional support systems for personnel.
