President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as a “statesman, soldier-democrat and patriot,” praising his pivotal role in Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999.
Tinubu, whose address was delivered on his behalf by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday, spoke at the 84th birthday celebration and book launch in honour of the retired military leader.
He said Abdulsalami’s decision to oversee a swift transition to democracy within 11 months remains one of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s political history, adding that it laid the foundation for the country’s current Fourth Republic.
The President noted that the former military ruler placed national interest above personal ambition, choosing to hand over power on schedule at a time of uncertainty.

Tinubu also recalled his personal experience during exile, saying Abdulsalami’s assurance of safety and commitment to a credible transition encouraged his return and participation in the democratic process.
He described Abdulsalami as one of the “founding fathers of modern Nigerian democracy,” commending his continued role in peacebuilding through the National Peace Committee.
According to the President, Abdulsalami remains a discreet adviser whose counsel has been valuable to his administration.
Tinubu further called for stronger democratic institutions and national unity, stressing the need to sustain the values of integrity, sacrifice and patriotism exemplified by the former Head of State.
He also directed the allocation of land in the Federal Capital Territory for the Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre, describing it as a step toward strengthening democratic ideals and peace initiatives.
The event attracted regional and continental leaders, including Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio and former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who delivered the keynote address.
