Vice President Kashim Shettima has stressed that the success of ongoing government reforms depends largely on public understanding and acceptance, warning that policy gains could be undermined if citizens remain disconnected from their objectives.
Speaking at a policy dialogue in Abuja, Shettima said reforms introduced by the administration of Bola Tinubu are necessary but must be effectively communicated to ensure buy-in from Nigerians.
“Our reforms are not just about policies on paper; they are about people. If the people do not understand them, they cannot fully benefit from them,” he said.
The Vice President acknowledged that measures such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange adjustments have imposed short-term hardships but insisted they are crucial for long-term economic stability. He urged government agencies to intensify public engagement and simplify communication around complex policies.

According to Shettima, misinformation and lack of clarity have contributed to resistance in some quarters. He called for collaboration between government, media, and civil society to bridge the information gap and foster trust.
Economic experts at the event echoed his concerns, noting that reform fatigue can set in when citizens do not see immediate benefits or lack clarity about policy direction. “Transparency and communication are just as important as the reforms themselves,” said economist Amina Bello.
Shettima also highlighted ongoing efforts to cushion the impact of reforms, including targeted social interventions and support for small businesses. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development.
The Vice President concluded by urging Nigerians to remain patient, assuring them that the reforms are designed to reposition the economy for resilience and prosperity.
