Nigeria’s push for food security has received a major boost with the injection of $500 million into agricultural development initiatives under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The funding, announced by government officials in Abuja, is aimed at enhancing food production, improving supply chains and supporting farmers across the country. It forms part of broader efforts to address rising food prices and ensure sustainable agricultural growth.
Officials said the investment will focus on key areas such as irrigation, mechanisation, storage infrastructure and access to credit for farmers. The goal is to increase productivity and reduce post-harvest losses, which have significantly impacted food availability.
The government also plans to expand support for smallholder farmers, who constitute a large portion of Nigeria’s agricultural workforce. By providing improved seeds, fertilisers and modern farming techniques, authorities hope to boost yields and incomes.
“This funding will accelerate our efforts to achieve food security and reduce dependence on imports,” a senior official said.
The initiative is expected to create jobs across the agricultural value chain, from farming to processing and distribution. It will also strengthen partnerships with private sector players and development agencies.
Experts have welcomed the funding but emphasised the need for effective implementation and monitoring. They noted that previous interventions have been hindered by inefficiencies and lack of accountability.
Farmers’ groups expressed optimism, saying the support could help address longstanding challenges such as poor infrastructure and limited access to finance. However, they called for timely disbursement of funds and inclusion of rural communities.
Tinubu’s administration has prioritised agriculture as a key driver of economic growth, with policies aimed at increasing local production and stabilising food prices.
Officials say the $500 million investment marks a significant step toward achieving these goals and ensuring that Nigerians have access to affordable and nutritious food.
