Zipline Nigeria is targeting deeper penetration of the country’s healthcare logistics market as it seeks to use autonomous transportation technology to improve the movement of medicines, vaccines, blood and other critical medical supplies.

The company, which commenced operations in Nigeria in 2022, said its logistics network has so far served more than six million people across three states, completed over 190,000 deliveries and transported more than 6.5 million vaccine doses.

Anthonio (Tonio) Pinheiro, the newly appointed Country Director of Zipline Nigeria, said the company’s priority is to develop a reliable healthcare transportation infrastructure rather than simply deploy drones as a technology solution.

According to him, Nigeria’s healthcare challenge extends beyond the availability of hospitals and primary healthcare centres to the ability to move essential medical products quickly and efficiently to facilities when they are needed.

“Success is not simply about deploying technology. You have to understand the realities on the ground, earn the trust of healthcare workers, and build something that fits into the health system,” Pinheiro said.

He explained that Zipline’s autonomous delivery network is designed to allow healthcare facilities to order essential supplies and receive them rapidly, reducing dependence on conventional transportation systems that may be affected by distance, road conditions, traffic congestion and other logistical constraints.

Pinheiro said the company’s operations go beyond drones, describing autonomous aircraft as one component of an integrated logistics system involving warehousing, inventory management, cold-chain storage, order fulfilment, delivery and digital tracking.

He said the approach enables medical products to be transported in response to real-time demand instead of requiring healthcare facilities to maintain large inventories that could expire or remain unused.

Since entering the Nigerian market, Zipline has worked with government stakeholders to integrate its delivery infrastructure into public healthcare systems.

Pinheiro said such partnerships were critical because technology-driven transportation solutions could only achieve sustainable impact when they were aligned with government priorities and existing healthcare operations.

He said Nigeria’s expanding healthcare infrastructure had increased the need for dependable transportation and distribution systems capable of connecting facilities with essential supplies.

“Population growth and the cost of maintaining power, equipment, staffing and medical supplies have grown faster than the resources available,” he said.

Pinheiro added that a patient should not be referred to another healthcare facility simply because a medicine, vaccine or unit of blood was unavailable at the point of care.

He said efficient transportation and logistics could help healthcare facilities respond faster to demand while reducing waste and stockouts.

On expanding the network across more states, Pinheiro said sustainable growth would depend on reliability, measurable results and the confidence of government and healthcare stakeholders.

He said governments would scale transportation infrastructure when it consistently delivered value rather than simply because the technology was innovative.

He cited reported outcomes from Zipline’s operations, including a 51 percent reduction in maternal deaths, up to 84 percent reduction in severe acute malnutrition and a 60 percent reduction in the duration of vaccine stockouts.

According to him, the long-term objective is to establish a trusted national logistics network that healthcare facilities and communities can depend on.

Pinheiro also dismissed the perception that autonomous drones are intended to replace Nigeria’s conventional transport networks.

Instead, he said autonomous logistics should be viewed as another layer of the country’s transportation infrastructure, particularly for urgent and time-sensitive medical supplies.

He said the technology could complement existing road-based logistics by providing rapid delivery to locations where conventional transportation may take longer or face operational challenges.

“When the technology is integrated into public health systems and paired with local talent, it can expand access, reduce waste, and help facilities provide more consistent care,” he said.

Zipline’s expansion highlights the growing role of autonomous transportation in Nigeria’s logistics sector, particularly in specialised areas where speed, reliability and real-time delivery are critical to saving lives.
