Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi ended his Premier League goal drought on Saturday, scoring to help Coventry City secure a 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The 37th-minute strike marked Awoniyi’s first Premier League goal of the 2026/27 season following an earlier goal in the EFL Cup. The Nigerian international delivered an energetic 72-minute performance, troubling the visitors’ defense before being substituted.
Frank Lampard’s side took the lead in the 17th minute through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto before Awoniyi doubled the advantage. Jack Rudoni added a third in the 52nd minute to extend the lead over the basement side managed by Régis Le Bris.

Enzo Le Fée converted a 67th-minute penalty following a VAR review to reduce the deficit, but Sunderland failed to mount a comeback. The visitors finished the match with ten men after defender Omar Alderete received a second yellow card deep into stoppage time.
The victory provides Coventry City with three vital points as they continue their bid to climb away from the relegation zone.
