Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to put patriotism, peace, unity and justice ahead of political interests as the country prepares for another electoral season.
Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message shared on his X platform on Thursday, October 1, as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary.
The former President said the forthcoming electoral period would test the country’s democratic maturity and urged citizens to ensure that political activities do not undermine national stability.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity,” Jonathan said.
He urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that protect peace, unity and justice throughout the electoral process.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, Jonathan acknowledged the challenges the country had faced over the years but said citizens had repeatedly demonstrated resilience in overcoming difficult periods.
He encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to national unity while working towards a better future.
“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant,” he said.
Jonathan also pointed to Nigeria’s human and natural resources as opportunities that could support sustainable development if effectively harnessed.
He particularly urged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous as they contribute to efforts aimed at building a country capable of providing better opportunities for future generations.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he said.
The former President also placed responsibility on political and public leaders to demonstrate greater commitment to the country.
He called for responsible leadership, personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and respect for the rule of law in addressing Nigeria’s social and economic challenges.
“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” Jonathan said.
He urged leaders to put the welfare and interests of citizens at the centre of governance while strengthening democratic institutions.
Jonathan further appealed to Nigerians to contribute to national development and maintain a commitment to building a peaceful, secure and equitable society.

“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he said.
His message comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the former President urging citizens and leaders to protect Nigeria’s unity and democratic stability throughout the electoral period.
Jonathan’s appeal focused on peaceful political participation and the need for Nigerians to place the country’s long-term interests above partisan considerations.
